Real-time estimation of dynamic functional connectivity networks.

چکیده
Two novel and exciting avenues of neuroscientific research involve the study of task-driven dynamic reconfigurations of functional connectivity networks and the study of functional connectivity in real-time. While the former is a well-established field within neuroscience and has received considerable attention in recent years, the latter remains in its infancy. To date, the vast majority of real-time fMRI studies have focused on a single brain region at a time. This is due in part to the many challenges faced when estimating dynamic functional connectivity networks in real-time. In this work, we propose a novel methodology with which to accurately track changes in time-varying functional connectivity networks in real-time. The proposed method is shown to perform competitively when compared to state-of-the-art offline algorithms using both synthetic as well as real-time fMRI data. The proposed method is applied to motor task data from the Human Connectome Project as well as to data obtained from a visuospatial attention task. We demonstrate that the algorithm is able to accurately estimate task-related changes in network structure in real-time. Hum Brain Mapp 38:202-220, 2017. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Evaluation of Model-Based Methods in Estimating Dynamic Functional Connectivity of Brain Regions
Today, neuroscientists are interested in discovering human brain functions through brain networks. In this regard, the evaluation of dynamic changes in functional connectivity of the brain regions by using functional magnetic resonance imaging data has attracted their attention. In this paper, we focus on two model-based approaches, called the exponential weighted moving average model and the d...
متن کاملSynchronization for Complex Dynamic Networks with State and Coupling Time-Delays
This paper is concerned with the problem of synchronization for complex dynamic networks with state and coupling time-delays. Therefore, larger class and more complicated complex dynamic networks can be considered for the synchronization problem. Based on the Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional, a delay-independent criterion is obtained and formulated in the form of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs)...
متن کاملMulti-Area State Estimation Based on PMU Measurements in Distribution Networks
State estimation in the energy management center of active distribution networks has attracted many attentions. Considering an increase in complexity and real-time management of active distribution networks and knowing the network information at each time instant are necessary. This article presents a two-step multi-area state estimation method in balanced active distribution networks. The prop...
متن کاملTemporal and spectral characteristics of dynamic functional connectivity between resting-state networks reveal information beyond static connectivity
Estimation of functional connectivity (FC) has become an increasingly powerful tool for investigating healthy and abnormal brain function. Static connectivity, in particular, has played a large part in guiding conclusions from the majority of resting-state functional MRI studies. However, accumulating evidence points to the presence of temporal fluctuations in FC, leading to increasing interest...
متن کاملLearning effective brain connectivity with dynamic Bayesian networks
We propose to use dynamic Bayesian networks (DBN) to learn the structure of effective brain connectivity from functional MRI data in an exploratory manner. In our previous work, we used Bayesian networks (BN) to learn the functional structure of the brain (Zheng, X., Rajapakse, J.C., 2006. Learning functional structure from fMR images. NeuroImage 31 (4), 1601-1613). However, BN provides a singl...
